It's spring! Oh, hurray! Tulips, jonquils, daffodils, snowdrops and hyacinth are showing off in a riotous display of bloom. Fruit trees and lilac bushes are budding out, preparing to burst joyously forth in all of their May finery. And green, green, green... emerald, lime, chartruse, forest, olive... so many hues and shades, it's mind boggling!

Can you tell that I love spring? I am thrilled to be alive this time of year. Life is joyous and marvelous at all times, but this time of year is truly beyond equal (of course, you'll probably catch me saying that when autumn rolls around too). I like to complain during the long cold winters about living in such a frigid climate, but when spring rolls around I am reminded why I love it so much. It is the striking contrast, the constant newness and freshness and change. Nature in all of her glory and all of her garb treats us to entertainment more amusing and uplifting than any movie, song, or book ever could.

No matter where you live or what season of the year it is for you now, take a few moments to commune with nature. Let the wind speak to you, let the sun warm your face. Better yet, plant something, a seed or seedling and watch it grow. Imagine having your own fresh herbs to add to a tossed salad or a picking a ripe red tomato from the plant on your back porch. If you live in an apartment find a window with a sunny exposure, buy a packet of seeds, a pot and a little soil and start something growing. It's easy to go down to the local greenhouse or supermarket and buy a big healthy plant, but that can never compare to seeing that first little spear of green poking its head out of the black earth. When it grows and thrives you will be filled with wonder, awe and pride.

Celebrate spring! Tell me about your gardens, your back yard, your adventures in the world of flora.

Thought for the week:

You may have no choice in whom your tax dollars finance. But those you support from the goodness of your heart should, in turn, support the goodness of your personal values.
